Marketing Your Web Site

How about getting more hits on your web pages?

Until your your web site is found by visitors, it's lost in internet space, so to speak.  So how do go from "lost" to "found"?  You could try visiting the wonderful web pages designed by K.Font (shameless plug) for the Vineyard Church - but that probably won't help increase your web page hits!

No, this is about Marketing!  Advertising!  Publicizing!  So where do you start?  Here are some tips to get your creative ideas flowing and I've also included some links to several excellent resources that  you can visit for even more information.

  • Submit your web site to the appropriate search engines check out K.Font web site submission tips for details
  • Put your URL (that's your web site address) on EVERYTHING you can - stationary, business cards, ads, tattoos... well, maybe not tattoos - but you get my point.  This is ESPECIALLY a must if you are using your own domain name for the address!
  • Advertise via regular media - newspaper ads, magazine ads, flyers left at businesses, front doors or car windows, posters at local stores, radio spots or even T.V. and bill boards if you're ambitious.
  • Direct mail is an option for those who already mail information to clients or send out newsletters or monthly billing.  A simple invitation to visit your new web site can bring lots of new visitors, along with other word of mouth referrals.
  • Press Releases & local publicity are another option.  Contact any magazines that may relate to your site & let them know your web site is out there.  Alert the media (look out Vinita Journal) to the latest news - that a new web site has been born & it is especially great if you have something to offer local folks that might encourage the papers or magazines to write about your web sites arrival.  You may get a front page story or you may get squat - but there's no cost involved except the time it takes to write the information down or make the call.
  • Banner advertising is offered by many of the search engines & a ton of other web sites out there - you've seen them, the little animated ads that whisk you away to another web site when you give them a little click.  Just check out the cost since it ranges from free (when you include their banner on your web page as a trade off for your banner to be added to theirs) up to mega-bucks (where you pay through the nose for your web site ad to be plastered on the busiest sites in the world).  Depending on where you put your banner and if your site is what folks may be interested in visiting - the increased traffic to you get could be a dead end or a traffic jam.  (Warning - Shameless Plug Alert - - - - and K.Font Web Designs offers Banner design if you choose this route I'd be happy to design it for you!)
  • Web Rings or User Nets are a possible place to list your site for those who are fairly internet savvy and want to take the time to list with them.  These are fairly new concepts and not as tried and true as standard search engines.
  • Link Exchanges are the, "you scratch my back I'll scratch yours" approach where if you add their link to your web site they'll add yours to theirs.  Like banners, it all depends on where you plug it and what you are plugging.
  • Purchased Links are similar to link exchanges, but this time you pay to have your site added to a list of links.
While this offers a shot gun approach of ideas to get found on the net, the folks you are targeting will help determine the best way to go.  For more help with marketing strategies, finding magazines that fit your topic or ideas on generating publicity check out some of the links below.
