Every web page package
offered by
K.Font includes submission of your new web site to a specified number
of
search engines, but I encourage you to register them with any others
you
feel are relevant to your web page. Search engines have different
ways of doing this, so you need to go to the home page of that search
engine
& look for information about how they want this done. After
you
add your site it may be checked out by a computer "spider" before
your site is added to their list, while others rely on people to visit
each site prior to it being included. This means it will take
from
24 hours to 6 weeks (or longer) before your site is listed.
Have this
information ready....
Your
web page address - be sure you
include the http://
before your address... it will look something like this -
http://www.yourdomainname.com
or perhaps http://www.servername.com/yourwebpagename
Your
email address & the name of
the person they
should contact if they have any questions about your web site.
A
brief description of your web site -
30 words or
less.
Key
words listed in order of
importance. Key
words are what you & others use to find web sites so try to think
of
the words, or two word combinations, that you would use to find your
site
with a search engine. Have a list of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 (or more)
since different search engines allow different numbers.
Title
of your web site - the more it
clarifies your
web site's content the better... NO-NO to, "Big Bill's Home Page"
OH-YES to, "Big Bill's Buffalo Ranch" Your title helps you get
placed
in the right category which means you get listed correctly & can be
found more easily by folks looking for what you've got!
Now,
find the Search Engine/Directory home
page and go
there - if you don't know where they are, see the list below or use
your usual search engine to find others.
Look
for words or buttons that say
things like, "submit
URL," "add a URL," "suggest a site," or something like
that.
If you can't find the submission information look for a "help" link or
button & check out how to submit a site or add a URL to their list
(URL is an abbreviation or acronym for "Uniform Resource Locator" which
is what your web site address is).
Now,
follow their directions - which
usually includes
a
form you fill in the blanks to, or an email link asking you to send
them
specified information.
Plan
what category your web site falls
under - some
offer general choices like business, organization, services - as well
as
more specific ones - while others ask you to type in a category.
My
final tip (and it's worth a shinny
buffalo nickel!)
is keep a record of the places you submit your site to & the
information
you included there - especially if you need to have a password or a
"contact
person's name" since you may need it again exactly as entered to make
corrections
or changes in the future. Then, check back every week or so to
see
if your site has been listed and make a note of the date & how near
the top of the list you are (the first 10 choices - first 20 - first
30...).
Something like the form below would be great to help you keep track...
